Minimising our impact, maximising restoration. We are committed to protecting the planet by reducing our environmental footprint and actively supporting the regeneration of nature. We’ve always believed in using what we need and looking after what we’ve got. As the business has grown, we’ve started to look more closely at our environmental footprint and how we can reduce it. We’re focusing on cutting our emissions, managing resources more carefully and supporting projects that help restore nature.
Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing our industry and the world around us, and we know we have a part to play. We’re concentrating on the areas where we can genuinely cut emissions and investing in technologies that help us do that. Whether it’s energy, transport or the products we source, our focus is on making steady, measurable reductions.
Each year we measure our emissions to understand where we’re making progress and where more work is needed. Over the past few years, we’ve been working to make practical improvements across our operations to reduce our energy usage. One of the first steps was replacing every bulb in our buildings with LED lighting – all 2,987 of them.
In 2019 we installed 3,669 solar panels at our Lancashire site. They generate around 770,000 kWh of electricity each year, enough to power the equivalent of 210 UK homes. This has helped halve our grid electricity use, and on days when the weather isn’t on our side, the remaining electricity we draw comes from a renewable provider.
Transport is another major part of our footprint, with our delivery fleet covering enough miles each year to circle the globe 28 times. All our fleet run on HVO, a renewable fuel made from waste fats and vegetable oils. From switching to HVO, our fleet emissions have fallen from 1,395 tCO2e in 2021 to 20 tCO2e in 2025 – the equivalent of taking around 320 cars off the road every year.
This year we saw an 80% reduction in our Scope 1 and 2 (market-based) emissions as a result of operational improvements to reduce Scope 1 emissions and our continued transition to renewable energy. Moving forward we will also start tracking our year-on-year changes in Scope 3 emissions now that we have a clear picture of our baseline.
Veritree, our new partner, is helping us restore natural habitats. With around 850,000 trees still to plant before we reach our goal of 2 million, Veritree is helping us get there, one tree (and kelp) at a time.
We chose Veritree because their projects are carefully designed to deliver real, measurable, benefits for nature, biodiversity and the communities who depend on healthy ecosystems.
We’ve committed to three of their restoration projects across the world: planting trees to support agroforestry in India – a country close to our hearts and a key source of many of our products, alongside restoring mangrove forests in Tanzania and sea kelp habitats in British Columbia, Canada. Agroforestry is a proven, sustainable land-management approach that integrates trees, crops and sometimes livestock, supporting livelihoods and nurturing nature-positive farming practices. While mangroves and kelp are both powerful carbon sinks and essential habitats for a variety of marine life.
To date, with Veritree we’ve planted nearly 45,000 trees and kelp – a strong start, with much more to come.
Looking ahead, we’ve partnered with Veritree to help deliver the next stage of our commitment – planting a further 850,000 trees to reaching our goal of 2,000,000 by 2030.
Using resources wisely has always been part of how we work. We’re now tracking our waste and water use more closely so we can cut what we consume, increase recycling and find simple, sensible ways to use resources more efficiently.
We’re working closely with our waste management partners to improve our recycling rates. Today we recycle cardboard, paper, plastics, wood and scrap metal and electricals. We’ve also invested in a polystyrene compressor, allowing us to recycle polystyrene on site. Any remaining waste is sent to waste-to-energy facilities, and we currently send no operational waste to landfill.
Water is another area where we’re looking to understand our usage more clearly. By monitoring consumption across the site, we can identify where improvements will have the biggest impact, particularly in higher-use areas such as our trailer wash. We’re also planning to harvest rainwater from one of our rooftops to use in our gardens and reduce our overall water demand.
We want our environmental impact to go beyond reducing harm. By investing in restoration and nature-based projects, we’re helping to protect the landscapes and ecosystems that support us and the communities we work with.
We’ve always had a genuine care for the environment around us, and tree planting has become a natural part of that effort. So far we’ve planted over 1,000,000 trees.
We previously partnered with the Eden Reforestation Project in Madagascar, planting ten trees for every customer order. Their projects restore healthy forests while creating reliable work for local communities and helping to reduce extreme poverty. We also worked with Permian Global, supporting the Katingan–Mentaya Peatland Restoration Project in Borneo to offset emissions from the parts of our business where lower-carbon options aren’t yet available. The project protects one of the world’s largest peatland forests, home to endangered wildlife, and prevents significant carbon from being released.
